Friday, March 20  |  Commencement 2020

We write today to talk about commencement. As you know, our traditional commencement ceremony has had to be canceled this year in light of the global COVID-19 outbreak and the restrictions on large gatherings in NYC, effective for at least the next eight weeks.

We share in your devastation at the cancelation of this significant event, a milestone for which you have all been purposefully, diligently preparing for many years. Not only is it a joyous celebration of all that you've accomplished in your time at MMC, but we have also heard many students express what an important moment of closure it is for this chapter of your lives.

While we can all appreciate the necessity of canceling the ceremony given the current global and local circumstances, it is difficult to process the anger, sadness, and frustration that come with the loss of such an important occasion in your lives. Please know that you are not alone in how you are feeling—tens of thousands of college seniors across the country and the world are grappling with the loss of their long-awaited walk across the stage.

The College is deeply committed to providing a reimagined commencement that celebrates your momentous achievements in a meaningful way. We ask anyone who is interested to complete this survey about potential ideas for commencement, to help guide the College's decisions during this challenging time. The Commencement Committee has met several times in the past week and discussed numerous possibilities, but this celebration is for you and we need to hear your voices.

We each handle emotional and uncertain times like these in different ways, and accordingly, we have heard very many, very different, opinions about what should happen with commencement. There are those who have called for a rescheduled, in-person ceremony, whenever that might be able to happen. There are others who are offended that we would presume students and their families could bear the expense of coming back to campus several months from now. And there are those who are simply heartbroken at missing the opportunity to hug their friends and shake their professors' hands. Some feel receiving their caps and gowns is necessary and deserved, while others are stung by the thought of receiving the garb without being able to walk the stage. We hear and understand each of these perspectives, as well as the many others that have been shared with us over the past few days. We again ask that you please share your thoughts here.

Although there is perhaps no one answer that will satisfy all 400 members of the Class of 2020, we are committed to making alternative plans that celebrate your time at MMC while protecting your health and safety and the health and safety of your loved ones. Despite the challenging circumstances, we're in this together.

COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY GUEST TICKETS
Guest tickets are required for admission to the Commencement Ceremony. Graduating students do not need a ticket as they will be seated in a reserved section of the audience by their degree program.

This year MMC is using an online ticketing system. Students who are cleared by CSS to graduate will receive a personalized code at Commencement Packet Pickup on April 28 and 29, 2020. That code will be used to gain entry to the Online Seat Selection platform that opens on Thursday, April 30, 2020. Graduates with a code can select up to (7) seven guest seats. Tickets will be emailed, and guests can enter the United Palace Theatre via scanning on their mobile device or printing out the tickets beforehand.

April 30: Online Seat Selection opens

May 7: Online Seat Selection closes

Late Ticket Requests: Graduating students who are cleared for graduation after April 29, 2020 may receive a reduced number of guest tickets. In addition, those seats may not be seated together.

LOTTERY FOR EXTRA GUEST TICKETS
If extra guest tickets become available, a lottery will be held beginning May 11, 2020. The availability of lottery tickets is not guaranteed as availability is based on the number of unreserved seats in the initial Online Seat Selection, thus lottery seat choices will likely be seated separately from your initial guest seat selections.
